Description: |
Join American Canoeing Association instructors to advance your touring kayak safety and rescue skills. Be prepared to take a swim through this involved course that will help you keep all boats afloat and prepare you for when they don’t float. See online description for full details and registration requirements. This course will include water submersion and solo/team rescue techniques. All kayaks and gear provided; personal equipment welcome, check with leader beforehand. Must be 14 years of age or older (must have liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). Dress for the weather and for frequent swimming. This class uses a spray skirt (instruction on use included in course). Student must be comfortable and confident in their kayak paddling ability, with thorough experience and/or have successfully completed a previous introductory kayak paddling skills course and meet Essential Eligibility Criteria (abilities and characteristics deemed fundamental for participation). EEC includes:
1. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
2. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water
3. Independently hold head upright without neck / head support
4. Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion
5. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion
7. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket
8. Get in / out of a paddlecraft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
9. Independently get out and from under a capsized paddlecraft*
10. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues listed in the Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation* Please make arrangements with program leader for special needs.
