Description: Did you buy a kayak during the pandemic or have you owned one for a few years? How prepared are you if your kayak flips and fills with water? Gain invaluable safety and rescue skills and test the possibilities and limitations of your recreational sit inside a kayak in this hands-on and in-the-water American Canoeing Association course. Instructors seek to advance your skills with your personal kayak through on-land, on-water, and in-water experiential training. This course will include water submersion and solo/team rescue techniques. Bring your own kayak and kayak equipment. See online description for full details and registration requirements. Registration deadline is Monday, July 12. Must be 14 years of age or older (must have liability form signed by legal guardian before attending the program). Dress for the weather and for frequent swimming. Student must be comfortable and confident in their kayak paddling ability and meet Essential Eligibility Criteria (abilities and characteristics deemed fundamental for participation). EEC includes: 1. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing) 2. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water 3. Independently hold head upright without neck / head support 4. Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion 5. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance 6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion 7. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket 8. Get in / out of a paddlecraft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance 9. Independently get out and from under a capsized paddlecraft* 10. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues listed in the Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation* *Please make arrangements with program leader for special needs.
